This is another really lovely activity that our kids loved doing and you probably have everything you need for it already in your cupboards!
For those of you that have seen my post on Candle Dripping, Crafts For Hand Eye Co-ordination – Fizzy Colour Drops is the second in the series.
The boring science bit:
It’s through practice and repetition that our hand eye co-ordination improves and it’s actually quite a complicated process if you think about it. You need to be able to co-ordinate your eye movements to look at what you want to look at, process the information that comes in through your eyes (your visual input) and then generate appropriate hand movements to achieve what you want to do. e.g. reach and grasp something off the table, have a drink or, more delicate operations like tying your shoe laces, holding a pen and writing etc. Helping children to develop their hand eye co-ordination enables them to do things more easily and ultimately without them having to stop and think about them first.
What you need:
- A shallow dish / bowl / disposable foil tray
- Glasses
- Food colouring
- Pale coloured oil (e.g. baby oil or sunflower oil)
- White vinegar
- Bicarbonate of soda
- Pipette / dropper / teaspoon

What you do:
- Pour oil into your container of choice
- In the glasses or cups, mix vinegar and food colouring
- Using whatever you choose, drop the coloured vinegar on to the oil, creating as many coloured drops as you like.
- Enjoy stirring them, swishing them, poking them, mixing them…
- When you’ve poured plenty of the coloured vinegar in…
- Sprinkle the bicarbonate of soda over the top and watch…

Do get a dropper if you can though as it’s great fine motor practice and they can be much more accurate with where they put their coloured drops. Watch them enjoy the different textures of the oil and vinegar mix and watching what happens to all the colours.
Enjoy and take some cool photos!
