I spotted this 3D Handprints activity on Buzzfeed.com and it’s SO SIMPLE. Another great activity for helping to develop and strengthen hand eye co-ordination…
I won’t repeat the science bit but if you’re interested in a very brief explanation, then please see the Candle Dripping post (another really fun crafty activity for hand eye co-ordination, where the kids get to play with fire and everything).
Kids who love drawing will love to give this a go. Those that aren’t so keen on writing and drawing generally, may find this interesting enough to give it a go. The more drawing and writing children do the more proficient they become with a pen, and that can only be a good thing can’t it?
If doing a whole hand seems too overfacing, then they can always do it with simple shapes instead.
Instead of pens, you can also use chalks and coloured paper, or thick marker pens too. Experiment and have fun! For younger children or children with special needs, you can help by drawing hand over hand.
So, obviously you need to draw round a hand first:

Then add some lines, equi-distant apart: the more ‘humpy’ you do the curvy lines, the more 3D your image will look.

Then add some colour – any combination will do but if you’re like us then you’ll be limited to the 3 or 4 pens that actually work in your 400 strong pen collection…

…and as you can see – you can make lots of ‘mistakes’ and still get a fairly striking result. How good is that?
Magical moments for you and your child to share
Take your children on a magical journey with these unique, hand-drawn letters from two of the most magical places on earth … the North Pole and Fairyland.
Hide them among the bills and junk mail, lay them on the table first thing in the morning, stashed among the toys, or snuggled up in their bed. You choose where your children find the letters, to create a magical family tradition the kids will love!
A great idea that I’d love to try it out #imaginationmatters
It’s fun and surprisingly effective.
That is freaking cool!! My kids are too young for this yet, but I might have a go myself, it looks great!

It’s funky isn’t it?? I got so close to it trying to do a demo to show our kids and thought it hadn’t worked but then my husband walked in and was surprisingly impressed. It kept the kids quiet for a while!
Love this. Love any craft. Always good to find more. I find these useful to do in hone school as well as just a general craft day! Really impressive. #bigfatlinky
Gosh yes, it would be great for that. Very impressive that you home school – I always admire that. Thank you for your lovely comment x
Really striking. I might use this idea with my class! Thanks for sharing it and for linking up to #bigfatlinky
