All the boys were out and our daughter (nearly 8) begged me to help her make a ‘thingy’. A ‘thingy’ as it turned out, is rather easy to make.
It’s called Tulip.
The concept of having ‘a little homemade friend’ was so popular with the boys when they got back, that I thought this would make a cool Christmas present that the kids could make for each other, or as a Stocking Filler.
You can make them any size you like, add teeth, pirate patch, zombie bandages, eyelashes, hair, whatever you fancy! You can even turn your ‘Thingy’ into a key ring for their school bag.
As it turns out a ‘Thingy’ is rather useful for all sorts of things (or are our kids just weird?):
- fantasy play
- used like a bean bag to see how many times you can hit the target / get it in a bowl
- part of a relay race across an obstacle course
- going with you in your pocket to boring places
- to play hide and seek with
- to snatch from your sister and play chase with
- to use in the same way as you would a joke spider or whoopee cushion
- to invite to a tea party
- to sleep on your pillow next to you
- to sit on your bedside table watching you read
What you need:
- leftover material / felt
- bit of felt / buttons / anything else for the eyes
- scrap of ribbon and of course
- toy stuffing (could also use shredded paper / scraps of material / wool)
- thread
Then what:
- Fold your material, right sides together and draw the shape of your ‘Thingy’. (Remember to go bigger than you think to allow a sewing margin).
- Then add your eyes, teeth, tongue or whatever else you want to to the right (rather than wrong) side of one of the pieces.
- Put right sides together again and sew all the way round with backstitch BUT do leave a hole big enough so you can turn it inside out and put the stuffing in!
- Turn it inside out and stuff it.
- Sew up the last little bit.
DONE!
