Having had a very busy (and lovely) Christmas with lots of family and friends, we had a well needed ‘just us’ post Christmas trip to ‘The Art of The Brick’ exhibition in the East End of London: over 80 art sculptures all made out of lego!
The artist (Nathan Sawaya) was a lawyer who discovered that he was actually much happier sitting on the floor building sculptures out of lego than sitting in various high powered meetings negotiating. Respect to him for changing his career and following his dream.
It cost us £47 to get in and with an 8, 6 and nearly 4 year old, we were in there for one and a quarter hours. We ended up in a space with lots of lego for the kids to knuckle down and do some building themselves.

I enjoyed it. The kids ran around marvelling at all the different things that could be made out of lego and, as kids do, tried to whizz us around the exhibition at breakneck speed. I’m always amazed by things I can’t do myself (so many things!) and loved the 3D sculptures more than the flat pictures / portraits. The dino skeleton was huge and impressive.

This swimmer was my favourite I think – they had set up the lighting so well and it felt a little bit like standing in an aquarium looking at this sculpture. The loose bricks surrounding the swimmer really broke things up and gave the whole thing a sense of water and movement.
Another good one was the computer operating itself. If only mine did too!

And one exhibit was particularly sad, inspired by a real life story:

I think it’s definitely worth a trip so if you’re in London (and feeling rich) and want something fun to do during the Christmas holidays. It’s a travelling exhibition so maybe keep an eye out for it more locally to you if you’re not in London?
