Brown Paper Christmas Stockings: Easy, Charming and Made to Fill
Brown paper Christmas stockings are one of the simplest and prettiest handmade Christmas ideas. They look lovely tucked under the Christmas tree, and they make sweet little stocking fillers when you pop some sweets inside.
A sweet idea for Baby’s First Christmas
A brown paper stocking also makes a gorgeous Baby’s First Christmas keepsake. Use it on its own as a stocking, or hang it as a special Christmas decoration to mark their very first Christmas.
Why we made them
I spotted this idea on Pinterest and made one for each of our three children, to sit alongside their usual Christmas stockings on Christmas morning. It’s a small touch that makes the day feel extra special.
Choose any shape you like
You can make brown paper Christmas stockings in lots of festive shapes, including stars, baubles, balls and trains. The stocking shown here is left open at the top. If you choose a different shape, sew all the way around so the treats are fully enclosed.
Top tip: Fill your brown paper Christmas stockings with treats before you finish the sewing, or you’ll be unpicking stitches on Christmas Eve.
Quick answers
What can I put inside brown paper Christmas stockings?
Sweets and small treats work beautifully as stocking fillers.
Can I make them in different shapes?
Yes. Stars, baubles, balls and trains all work. Sew fully around any closed shape to keep the treats inside.
Are they suitable for Baby’s First Christmas?
Absolutely. They make a lovely first Christmas stocking or decoration.
You will need:
- Brown paper cut into your chosen shape in pairs. Don’t forget to allow for enough room to do the actual sewing…!
- Twine of your choice, or embroidery thread.
- A needle with an eye large enough to take your chosen thread or twine.
- A plaster for when you prick your finger.
- A spare pair of shapes on standby ‘just in case’.
- A glass of wine.

What You Do:
- Tie a knot in your thread (and make a hanging loop if you’d like to hang your stocking up…)
- Sew the two shapes together.
That’s it! The sun went in when I took this pic…

Voila!
Now I’ve popped in some Candy Canes, but you could put anything in – novelty pencils, Candy Cane drinking straws, sweets, Glitter pens, Eye Liners (for older ones obvs)…how cool are they??

Please give this a go – these brown paper Christmas Stockings are so easy and super cute. The kids will love them!
