Having a visit from the Tooth Fairy is one of the loveliest childhood traditions, and receiving a Tooth Fairy letter is even more magical!
Apparently it goes back to early Norse and Northern European traditions, where children were paid a tooth fee for losing their first tooth. Since then, almost every child has been very interested to know how much the Tooth Fairy will pay in exchange for their various lost milk teeth! There's actually no set rate for the Tooth Fairy across the UK, so how much do you pay for a lost tooth? Is it £2 or £20, and does a Tooth Fairy pay out more for a molar than for a first tooth? Or maybe it depends if the tooth is clean ... which has the benefits of encouraging good dental habits ... or whether the tooth fell out naturally or if it was removed by a dentist?
Children lose 20 teeth in all, so whatever the Tooth Fairy gives in terms of a coin or a Tooth Fairy Letter - it soon mounts up. Perhaps children should also be given some advice on investments!
The problem is when the Tooth Fairy leaves one child £1 and then leaves another child £20 (which can happen when the Tooth Fairy almost forgets to come and has to scrabble around in her purse for any amount she can lay her hands on!). Why does one child get more money and a Tooth Fairy Letter from their Tooth Fairy for their lost teeth, than another child?
There is a solution to this - either all the parents in the area that you live in, agree a going rate for the tooth fairy (which is totally impossible) or your children learn that actually ...
The going rate for the Tooth Fairy, and whether or not they receive a Tooth Fairy Letter totally depends on what the Tooth Fairy’s pocket scanner says at the time of tooth collection. There’s absolutely nothing anyone can do about it – it’s all determined by ‘the computer system’. Most children seem to receive £1, or (if they’re lucky), £2 for a molar.
