A wonderfully brilliant idea … Recycle your Christmas Jumpers AND raise money for your school! This really should become a Christmas ‘thing’ – big thanks to Maggy Woodley from Red Ted Art.
Oh yes. It is that time of year, the season to be merry!! In fact, our FAVOURITE time of the year. There are so many great things to look forward to – with Christmas Day being the icing on the cake. This time of year, we have our School Fairs (with lots of fun DIY Christmas Party Games), we get to decorate our homes (don’t you love a homemade Christmas Ornament), there are mince pies, a lights and oh.. it is all just so magical!
But with the magical side of Christmas, there also comes ONE BIG problem. Waste. I am so sorry to be the bearer of bad news.. but I am not the Christmas Grinch. I promise. Because to every problem there is a solution.
One Christmas tradition that is causing a little bit of a headache is the wonderful Christmas Jumper. Let me reconfirm: we LOVE Christmas Jumpers!! What we don’t love, is the “one wear” only Christmas Jumper and the fast fashion industry that sits behind. Similarly, many families already struggle financially at Christmas, so the Christmas Jumper Day at school can become a big financial burden. But we have a solution.
Do your bit, one Christmas Jumper at a Time!!!
How?
Easy! Hold a Christmas Jumper Sale at your School, Community Centre or Church (or even in your living room).

For some (!) of you, it may be a little late to actually start selling any jumpers now… BUT you can start asking friends and family, colleagues and parents at school, that come January, you are collecting old Christmas Jumpers. Ask them to not throw or give them away, but to donate them to you.

Then next November (be sure it is November, before people start shopping), hold a Christmas Jumper sale. At our school we sell them at a bargain price of £2 (the charity shop sells them for £5-6 – so you can increase your prices if you wish). But £2 seems fair – it reduces fast fashion, it helps families with the financial burden of Christmas AND raises money. With funds matching our school raised £180!!! And that was our first sale.

Next year, I expect the figure to go up. As more parents will remember to hang onto their jumpers for us and we can hold another, bigger and better sale.
So go on.. join us. Do your bit, one Christmas Jumper at a Time!
PS.. too late to get a second hand jumper? Make your own – here is an easy Christmas Jumper Décor you can make in 5-10min – and remove again afterwards!
